BigCommerce pricing is organized by monthly plans, but each one has its own set of restrictions and limitations.

  • Of all the BigCommerce plans, the Standard plan is its most basic offering, starting at $29.95 per month. It includes unlimited products, unlimited storage and bandwidth, and the ability to accept multiple payment methods, but revenue is capped at $50,000 per year. It doesn’t include other features like abandoned cart saver or persistent cart. 
  • The Plus plan, which is the mid-tier option, is $79.95 per month. It includes all the basic features of the Standard plan, as well as a few additional ones like abandoned cart recovery, gift cards, and the ability to offer customer group pricing. The revenue limit is $180,000 per year.
  • The Pro plan is $299.95 per month. It includes all the features of the Standard and Plus plans, as well as advanced features such as Google customer reviews, advanced reporting, and the ability to create custom reports. Revenue is capped at $400,000 per year, and users are charged an extra $150/month for each additional $200,000 in sales. 
  • The Enterprise plan is for retailers with sales volumes greater than $400,000 per year. Despite the name, this is a very popular selection for many mid-sized businesses due to its extensive functionality. For example, the Enterprise plan can benefit from the B2B functionality package which delivers an entire suite of B2B functionality. The pricing for the Enterprise edition is customized and determined on a case-by-case basis. Who Should Use BigCommerce?

Magento Open Source is the “freemium” version of Adobe Commerce. It’s an open-source, self-hosted eCommerce platform that has robust eCommerce features and provides a lot of flexibility to customize your site. It is suitable for businesses that have technical expertise (or are willing to hire a development agency), as it does require substantial development work to get it up and running efficiently. 

Some of Magento Open Source’s features include:

  • Site search and catalog management supporting complex products and complex merchandising

  • Fully customizable frontend theme (as well as thousands of third-party themes)

  • Integrated checkout, payment, and shipping options
  • App marketplace for extensions and add-ons

While Magento Open Source is free to install, businesses using the platform must find a hosting provider and pay for customizations or additional development services. The cost of these services varies depending on the specific needs of the business. Here are estimates for some of these additional costs:

  • SSL Certificate: This can cost $50 to $600 per year (or more), depending on your site’s security requirements.
  • Web Developer: Quotes are based on the project and expertise of the developer, and are typically by the hour. International freelancers with limited expertise range from $40 - $90 per hour while agency teams typically range from $150 - $250 per hour.
  • Themes: It can cost $17 to $399 for a store theme. Theme customizations vary dramatically from simple to highly complex with costs varying accordingly.
  • Extensions and Add-Ons: These can be free or cost up to $2,000 (in the Adobe Commerce store) but these also often require developer time to integrate, test, and optimize with your site.
  • Hosting: Unlike BigCommerce, Magento Open Source and Adobe Commerce require you to host the eCommerce platform. This is most often done by working with a hosting company and hosting fees can range from as little as $200 per month to as much as $2000 or more per month depending on your needs.

The other option is Adobe Commerce, a paid solution that includes all the features of Magento Open Source, as well as the latest functional advancements released by Adobe including features such as:

  • Visual Merchandising: Businesses can automatically categorize products by popularity, which entices new visitors to explore and purchase the top-rated products in your store.
  • Customer Loyalty Tools: You can set up pop-up promotions, secret discounts, or rewards points for returning customers, which increases customer retention and brings back past customers.
  • Page Loading Priority: Thanks to Adobe’s content delivery network (CDN) — which stores a cached version of your website on multiple servers across the globe — you can expect optimized page loading even during high-traffic periods, like Black Friday. 
  • Performance Monitoring: Adobe Commerce provides consistent data on customer journeys. You can monitor how far customers make it through the sales process so you see where users drop off and optimize your site to improve conversions

Adobe Commerce does not offer pricing information on its site, so if you’re interested in the platform, you have to contact their team to discuss your requirements and receive a custom quote. Then, you should also consider the extra costs to maintain your Adobe Commerce Store, like the cost of hiring a developer to build out and optimize your site. 

Adobe’s hosted version of Adobe Commerce is called Adobe Commerce Cloud. This platform is referred to as a Platform as a Service (PaaS) in that Adobe is responsible for not only the maintenance and upkeep of the core Adobe Commerce platform but also for the hosting infrastructure that supports it.

Adobe Commerce and Adobe Commerce Cloud are being further developed by Adobe to integrate more fully with Adobe’s other cloud offerings such as Adobe Experience Manager. The combination of these Adobe products adds up to a superlative eCommerce and marketing engine.

While Adobe Commerce and Adobe Commerce Cloud come with a license fee, you get the support of Adobe’s Professional Services team and in the case of Adobe Commerce Cloud, you benefit from Adobe’s management of the hosting infrastructure.

Cons of Magento

Magento Requires an Experienced Developer

When deciding between Magento Open Source and Adobe Commerce, consider your business's size, complexity, and budget — but most importantly, think about how you want to build out the site and the resources you have to manage your Magento store. In many cases, it’s more convenient to choose Adobe Commerce because of its advanced functionality and early access to new upgrades and features.
