ClearBags started in 1992 as a small poster company called Impact Images. They sold posters in crystal clear bags. Soon, the bags stole the show, and it wasn't long before they shifted focus to this core product line. ClearBags now carries about 5,000 products — and none of them are posters.

ClearBags signed on with IronPlane & Snowdog to help them improve the user experience (UX) and user interface (UI) design of its e-commerce platform. The primary goals were to reach new customers while increasing customer satisfaction and retention.

The Challenges

  • Migrate Custom Functionality to Easier-to-Maintain Modules: Replacing custom functionality with third-party modules helps reduce site complexity but is a challenge to get right. As an Amasty partner, we were able to identify specific modules to help them reduce the existing custom code to provide more manageable code and operations.
  • Ensure Compatibility with Hyvä Theme: Another challenge was that existing site customizations had to be refactored to ensure compatibility with the Hyvä Theme. As a partner and contributor to the Hyvä solution, IronPlane & Snowdog were able to efficiently implement the necessary refactoring.
  • Develop a New Pricing Engine: The challenge was to design and develop a flexible and powerful pricing engine to dynamically update and display prices on the product detail page and in the shopping cart based on the number of products and customer group.
  • Ensure Unified Look & Feel Following Content Migration: With a substantial content migration effort, it was essential to ensure the site’s look and feel was consistent throughout. Working with the new Hyvä theme, IronPlane & Snowdog updated content styles and a number of CMS pages to provide the desired consistency.

Adobe’s comprehensive capabilities, flexibility, and integration with the broader Adobe ecosystem, made it a strong choice for building a sophisticated and scalable eCommerce solution.
  • Hyvä Theme & Hyvä Checkout: The Hyvä Theme and Hyvä Checkout were the preferred choices for the ClearBags store due to their focus on performance, simplicity, and modern design. The Hyvä theme further improves overall developer efficiency with its thoughtful architecture and application of the latest technologies.
  • IronPlane & Snowdog’s Magento 2 Menu: Magento 2 Menu is a powerful menu configurator developed by the Snowdog team that allows online merchants to create advanced menus to enhance their customers' shopping experience and improve SEO. This was an essential component of improving both visitor engagement and product discoverability.
  • Searchspring: We chose to integrate Searchspring with the Hyvä Theme to ensure that advanced search functionality is available both to ClearBags.com visitors and the team managing the site behind the scenes. This was accomplished by implementing Searchspring’s API integration with Hyvä, developing frontend customizations, and optimizing search performance via testing and configuration adjustments.

The Results

  • Site Performance Improvements: Customer experience was improved throughout the ClearBags site due to improvements in site performance and UX/UI optimization.
  • Hyvä Implementation: With Hyvä Checkout, we were able to simplify and streamline the payment process. By focusing on a minimalist and efficient checkout experience, buyer friction was reduced and shopping cart abandonment rates were minimized. The integration of Hyvä Theme and Hyvä Checkout helped maintain design consistency and functionality throughout the ClearBags site. Overall, the use of the Hyvä solutions created a new development environment that was more efficient and less costly to maintain.
